Phish has played thousands of shows for over 30 years. There are literally hundreds of arguable selections for best shows, and several contenders for best tour or year ever - each with valid reasons as to why depending on age, general music appreciation, and lifestyle. It would not be far fetched at all to say that in 2015 Phish reached another new peak. Ever since the return in 2009, Phish fans have been waiting to say "they're back!" or happily pronouncing their return to form after a select show or run. The truth is they have been back and playing strong since 2010 with some seriously good stretches since. There have been multiple claims of best versions ever. All that being said, let's recognize that Phish is in a current bull market and reaching new highs that many fans never thought possible. Drop the hate, jaded vets. Phish is rocking and jamming harder than ever.
Trey's experience with GD50 certainly invigorated him, and the rest of the band members (like the GD) are great at following and supporting a good lead. Trey is a creative and thrilling leader on guitar. He needed to feel that success from leading a group through risky jams to really regain his overall confidence in himself and what he could do with Phish.
Phish has given us the 2014 Halloween set and several new 2015 originals to chew on as they prime up for another new album. They have pushed the limits of their stage show with Magnaball Drive In and the Hourglass. Phish continues to give us so much more than we pay for.
This blog will look at the last week in Phish, the next week in Phish, and this week in Phish past.
Coming off of another stellar New Year's Run at the Garden, Phish rolls full steam ahead over the border to Mexico and a three night run on the Riviera. Get the webcast here
As with any Phish destination event, expect Riviera Maya to have something special either in song selection, stage presence, or approach to playing. I expect these shows to feel like a Gorge run in which the band is surrounded by something so much bigger that they fall into the setting and the music and mood get uniquely intertwined.
Mexico will be amazing. Have fun all of you there.
Expect a David Bowie for the ages.
I'm hoping for a Snowflakes in Sand appearance.
